Onboarding Skills: How to get new hires productive, build culture, and deliver on your brand promise.

Picture this: You are eating out at a new restaurant. You are not sure what to pick, so you ask the waiter for his recommendation. He says the seafood risotto is so good you will be licking your plate. That’s perfect! You love seafood risotto. You can’t wait to dig in.

The waiter comes back with what looks like microwaved leftovers. The rice is stale, and the seafood is questionable. He puts the plate in front of you and walks away without making eye contact.

You would be furious at the waiter for lying to you and mad at yourself for choosing that restaurant. The worst part is that you’re still hungry, and you have to find a new place to eat.

Unfortunately, this is what many new hires experience during their onboarding. They trust us blindly during the interview process, hoping we will deliver on our promise and serve them the experience they hope for.

In this session, we will discuss how onboarding impacts culture, engagement, retention, and, ultimately, business results. We will also examine the Manager’s role in onboarding new hires and outline the key skills that can make or break the onboarding process. Lastly, we will talk about the importance of trust and designing a human-centred onboarding experience, even in remote teams.
